Successional Planting

Following Steve’s very successful talk on Drought Tolerant Plants, last year, he is back to talk about successional Planting. 

Planning a border and garden so you always have something flowering is a challenge, in this talk we will look at plant choices through the year that can work together to give you interest in all seasons. 

During the evening, Steve and Lou will be selling some of the plants from their nursery.

Loseley Park Visit with Guided Tour

Thursday 16th May 2024 10.30am  

Located just three miles west of Guildford, we’re fortunate to have this 15th-century estate on our doorstep. Our tour of the garden based on a design by Gertrude Jekyll, will be led by the Head Gardener. The estate is the residence of the More-Molyneux family, direct ancestors of the original owners.

Cost - £18 not including lunch

Transport – Self-drive – Car share where possible. Parking is free

Refreshments – small café on-site serving refreshments and snacks. 

For those wishing to reserve a table for lunch – a selection of sandwiches with salad garnish and elderflower water is available (dietary requirements catered for), a charge of £15 will be required when booking. The café advise only customers with a reservation will be seated at reserved tables.

Great Dixter Visit with Guided Tour

Thursday 13th June 2024 10.30am

A rare treat to enjoy a guided tour of the gardens at Great Dixter as well have access to the house, bought and developed in the early 1900s by Nathaniel Lloyd assisted by Lutyens. Surrounding the house, the gardens include topiary, meadows, water features and mixed borders including the famous long border.

Meet at 10.30am for tour with associate horticulturalist.

Garden Tool Sharpening Day

At Mickleham Village Hall, RH5 6EE

During the Mickleham and Westhumble Horticultural Society Summer Show

Saturday 13th July 2024        9am – 4pm

 

Tools work better when kept sharp and in good condition and using shape tools is kinder and healthier for your plants.

Bring your tools along and Adam from Surrey Sharpeners will bring them back to life.

Prices will be available at a later date.

Turners Hill Dahlia Nursery with Guided Tour

The Garden Shed have secured a guided tour at Withypitts Dahlias Nursery. This is where the most recognised Dahlia grower in this country grows a vast collection of Dahlia. An interesting and informative tour by the man himself behind his successful Dahlia Farm which supplies cut flowers to many well known establishments. Withypitts also sells garden ready plants, including some interesting new varieties.

Hyde Hall visit with Guided Tour

Thursday 12th September 2024  10.30am

 

As The Garden Shed is affiliated with the RHS, we have been able to arrange garden entry with a tour led by one of Hyde Hall’s volunteers at a special rate. Encompassing a mix of styles including a drought resistant and vegetable garden along with herbaceous borders, there’s something for everyone.

The A–Z of Bulbs  

with Johnny Walker

Tuesday 1st October 2024   7.30pm

This talk will cover both Autumn and Spring planting bulbs and as the name suggests starts with Anemones and Alliums and goes through to Zantedeschia.

It will include planting, feeding and post flowering care etc. 

The talk should last for about an hour and questions will be welcome.

Johnny will also be bringing a selection of bulbs to sell after the talk.

Composting and Growing Medium

Mark is an enthusiastic gardener, who likes to share his knowledge, he has given us several very interesting talks, full of inspiring information. This talk will also be very valuable for us gardeners. 

We will look at the different types of compost containers, the materials that make good compost, and how to incorporate them in to create the correct enzymes to enable them to rot down. Resulting in a valuable material - all for free.

Following that we will look at the different bought peat-free growing mediums and why some are miles better them others.

Christmas Wreath Making and Table Decoration Workshop

Sunday 8th December 2024     9.15am – 12.30pm

at Mickleham Village Hall, RH5 6EE

By popular demand, we are once again hosting a Christmas Crafts workshop in Mickleham Village Hall. Enjoy a morning and make, either a Christmas wreath or table decoration accompanied by some festive tunes, snacks and refreshments. As far as possible we will be using locally sourced foliage and natural or recycled products.

This annual event is the perfect way to start the Christmas season and early booking is essential to avoid disappointment.

Cost - £45 per person, includes materials, festive snacks and refreshments.
