Discoveries

We have made lots of interesting discoveries including:

Signatures on the old lead flashing, written by workmen on the roof in past centuries. These include an inscription written on Queen Victoria's 70th birthday in 1889 as well as some written more recently.

A silver "Long Cross" half penny possibly from the reign of Edward 1 (1272-1307) found in front of the building.

19th and 20th century pottery fragments.

A carved sandstone step likely to be the way into what John Benn Postlethwaite described in his will as the "pleasure grounds".

Most of these finds are displayed inside the building.

In medieval times pennies were the lowest denomination of coin. This one has been cut in half to make an actual half penny.
