St Albans played three matches in midweek and over the weekend. On Wednesday a men's triples friendly at home to Hatfield, played on four rinks, was reduced to 14 ends due to rain during the match. Both teams won on two rinks, but St Albans sneaked home by 44 shots to 41. With a score of 17-5 the top rink for St Albans, and crucial to gaining the win, was Paul Colwill, Karen Marshall and skip Peter Browne

Saturday's fixture was away to Harperbury, a mixed triples friendly played over four rinks. St Albans won on only one of the rinks through the efforts of Ray Hancock, Irene Humphrey and skip Peter Kay. Whilst they beat their opponents by 21 shots to 14, the match result was in favour of the home side by 75-65.

St Albans did better on Sunday at home to a strong, experienced side from Hemel Hempstead. A mixed friendly rinks match, St Albans played well to win by 69 shots to 56, and top rink included Peter Browne, Sarah Hughes and skip John Harvey.

11th May 2026

St Albans Bowling Club's first Open Day of the season was held on Saturday. 26 people came and spent time playing bowls under tuition. Many of those have either arranged further coaching sessions or are considering dates for doing so. Further Open Day sessions will be taking place on Wednesday 20 May between 5pm - 8pm, and on Saturday 23 May between 10am - 4pm. Anybody interested in giving bowls a try but who cannot make either of these sessions can arrange something more suitable by contacting Richard Hall on 07429 407365 or richardatsabcrecruitment@gmail.com.

St Albans played a match on their Clarence Park Green on Sunday against Welwyn & District. A very closely contested four rink mixed friendly, St Albans won on one rink, drew on one and lost on the other two, but won overall by 61 shots to 59. The margin of the score on the one winning rink was pivotal to the result with the top honours for their 23-12 win going to Alison Thomas, Lynne Engelbright, Ramiro Rodriguez and skip Bob Pomeroy.

St Albans Bowling Club lost their midweek fixture but won both of their weekend matches. On Tuesday, a mixed triples friendly was played over five rinks at Potters Bar. Although St Albans won on two rinks, the overall score resulted in a heavy defeat by 56 to 94 shots. The top rink was Les Kirk, skip Irene Humphrey and Chris Debenham, who won 15-11. The problem was the greater margin of the losses on the three rinks taken by the home side.

On Saturday St Albans hosted Potten End at Clarence Park in a mixed triples friendly played across six rinks. The result was a high scoring match and, with both teams winning on three rinks each, the final count showed St Albans as the narrow winners by 99-97. With the top rink of Sally Griffiths, Barbara Davis and skip Paul Hughes winning by as many shots as 24-10, their effort was instrumental in St Albans edging the overall score.

Sunday's mixed triples friendly was a more one-sided affair. Played at Luton West End on four rinks, and entertained well by the hosts throughout the afternoon, St Albans responded by winning on all four to take the match 95-38. There was close competition for top rink, but by winning 25-4 the best performers were Lynne Englebright, Roy Andrews and skip John Harvey.

The main honours for St Albans were taken by a rink that included Paul Miles and skip Mike Pitkin with a score of 21-15.

St Albans played at Clarence Park on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's fixture was played over five rinks against North Mymms. Despite St Albans winning on two rinks and losing the other three, the overall result went the way of the home side by 81-79. St Albans' top rink by 21-8 was Paul Hughes, Ramiro Rodriguez and skip Peter Kay.

After three very tight matches, Sunday's win for St Albans against Shire Park was more straightforward. St Albans won on four of the five rinks, losing the other, for an overall win by 102-51. Top rink with a score of 26-7 was Karen Marshall, Chris Palmer and skip Peter Browne.

13th April 2026

St Albans Bowling Club's Opening day for the new season took place last Saturday at its Clarence Park home and was attended by 44 players and about 20 social members.

The Mayor, Councillor Teresa Heritage, was greeted by Mike Pitkin, the club‘s President (see photo below) and Ian Woodcock the club’s Secretary. She was introduced to the club’s oldest member Ted Salvidge (93), and stayed for the commencement of the afternoon’s bowling activities.

The Mayor gave a short speech which focused on inclusivity - the benefit which clubs such as the St Albans Bowling Club bring to the community and the importance of enabling social contact particularly for the older generation - before delivering, as is traditional, the first wood of the season.

The club has a full fixture list of friendly and competitive matches against other clubs, and will be holding three Open Days during May when there will be taster sessions for anyone, young or old, who is interested in giving bowls a try. The first will be on Saturday 9 May between 10am and 4pm. The second is on Wednesday 20 May between 5pm and 8pm. The third is on Saturday 23 May between 10am and 4pm. All are welcome, whether or not they have bowled before. Turn up at any time and we will try to accommodate you. However, to avoid disappointment and especially if coming in a group of four or more, please contact Richard Hall to book a slot, on 07429 407365 or richardatsabcrecruitment@gmail.com. Please also contact Richard if none of the above dates are convenient but you would like to try bowls anyway.
