Match Reports 2026

Townsend Bowls club of Waverley Road St Albans kicked off the season with a home tie against Redbourn.

With a mixture of Triples and pairs, Townsend won on three, lost one and drew one, winning overall by 20 shots. Top rink was a pair of Jane Dixon and Andy Scarborough who won by 12 shots.

In their midweek match Townsend hosted a very strong team from Harpenden, but the end result was extremely close, with the visitors winning by only one shot. Top rink for the hosts was Annabel Alcock, Bob Padget and skip Bob Lawrie, who won by 13 shots.

Each season Townsend host both London Welsh, and London Scottish, with the guests at this early juncture in the season being six triples of Scots. With a less than positive weather forecast, and the potential threat of a breakdown in the heat wave, the fact that the actual weather was dry with a light breeze, meant very good news for both the bowlers and the bar takings! The end result in what was a most enjoyable fixture, was a win for Townsend, by 99 shots to 83, and by a most convincing 5 rinks to the visitors’ one.

Top rink was that of Annabel Alcock, John Cawley and skip Les Perkins, and the victory marked the first success for weekend captain, Russell Hansard.

Townsend bowlers also featured strongly at the Watford Woodside indoor bowls annual prizegiving. The team managed to win no less than three of the triples leagues, and were only very narrowly pipped to a fourth award. The lineup, of Bob Lawrie, Alan Charran, Robbie Ransted, Ian Forster, Anne-Marie Stuart-Reid and Peter Thomson, have now transferred their efforts to the outdoor scene.
