Match Reports 2026

Three rinks of Townsend bowlers found themselves at Harpenden in midweek, for a district league match.

With the weather set fair a close encounter was expected. And so it developed, with Townsend winning on two of the rinks but the hosts claiming credit for the overall score.

In the end, honours were even, as were points, at 40 each. One of the Townsend rinks, Matt Stuart-Reid, Bob Padget, Russell Hansard and Alan Charran took an early lead, and were never bettered, winning by 21:16.

Top rink plaudits, however, went to NN, Roger Potter, Bob Lawrie and Peter Thomson who won by 18:11.

The weekend friendly was reduced to 3 triples by the visitors, Pavillion, of Bushey. With one rink drawn and one won by each side, the overall result depended on shots. Townsend won this convincingly by 57–46.

Contributing greatly to this overall score was the top rink of Sue Sykes, John Cawley and skip Les Perkins who won by 30–12.

In the Bob Vise trophy match against Batchwood, four rinks of bowlers competed in singles, pairs, triples and fours. At the end of play Batchwood had won on two disciplines, and Townsend on the other two. The scores, remarkably, were also even at 62 shots each…

That meant a hurried look through the rules book and a count back of ends won by each team. On this measure Batchwood progressed to the next round.

In the pairs, Peter Thomson and Alan Charran made heavy weather of the first half of the match, and were trailing at that point. After they gained control of the mat and started putting shorter jacks in place, the tide turned and in the end a convincing 21–11 win was recorded. The fours, comprising NN, Peter Armstrong, Russell Hansard and Jason Hall, recorded an excellent 24–9 victory
