WARK PARISH COUNCIL

 

Wark lies on a particularly beautiful stretch of the North Tyne river, just twelve miles north of Hexham and fourteen south of Kielder Water.  The village is well served by local transport with local buses running through to Hexham, and connecting with the Hadrian’s Wall AD 122 service.

At the centre is a picture-postcard village green, dominated by a magnificent chestnut tree which was planted in 1887, to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. 

The Town Hall is a popular venue, it frequently hosts events including; Friday coffee mornings, were tea, coffee and homemade cakes are served from 10am to noon.

Battlesteads Hotel provide good accommodation, food and drink, whilst the Grey Bull remains a traditional pub. 

The Shop and Post Office is open all day for your daily requirements. Cafe 1897 provides food and treats, as well as a good place to catch up with friends.

Across the river the Sports Club provides a variety of sports facilities and children’s play area to keep young and old amused and entertained.

The Pennine Way and Pennine Cycle track pass close by, while a number of footpaths enable visitors to explore the beautiful countryside and river. Walk leaflets are available free from the Shop.

To the West of Wark is the village of Stonehaugh, where the Warksburn picnic area provides, a toilet, Totem Poles, Star Gazing Shelter and many forest trails. In the forest it is possible see wild life such as roe-deer and red squirrels Walk leaflets can be found at the Stonehaugh Community Hall which hosts Stonehaugh Social Club, with Bar, Pool, and Darts.

Stonehaugh nestles in the Dark Sky Park and for those interested in Astronomy there are organised Star Gazing Events. The Pennine Way, Cycleway 68 pass and the new Reavers trail are close by. There are also Bridleways and footpaths that lead to The Sill.  

Wark Parish Council is elected every 4 years by local residents and is responsible for:

  • Maintenance of the council public spaces, public benches and litter bins.
  • Reviewing and commenting on planning applications within the Parish.
  • Liaising with relevant authorities regarding infrastructure /policing/community issues, to represent your views and get the best advantage for the local area
  • Engaging with all interested parties regarding current and future shape of life in the local area.
