History

The village of Wellington has a number of sporting facilities - tennis courts, football pitches and a bowls green, which come under an overall umbrella organisation called Wellington Community Association (WCA). 

Along with the tennis and football clubs, Wellington Bowls Club was formed as a result of obtaining a grant from the Lottery Commission in 1996.

 

The sports clubs have their own sub group of the WCA, called the Playing Fields Sub Group and each club has two representatives which meet approximately every six months. The purpose of these meeting is to share progress and provide support where possible.

Because of the age of the members and the high cost of maintaining a grass green, an all weather surface was selected. In 1996 an all weather surface meant an indoor carpet laid outdoors. Towards the end of its 17 year life, the surface became so flat it was like bowling on glass and was not liked by many opposing teams when they visited us. In 2014 as a result of another Lottery grant, as well as a considerable amount of funds raised by the club, the surface was replaced with a purpose designed all weather carpet. The surrounds were also upgraded, with a new shed, enlarged pavilion including power and water and a new surounding footpath.

The new green was an offically opened in April 2014 and many local dignitaries were invited. The picture below shows Mr Bryan White - Secretary of Herefordshire Sport, Mr David Wood - Club President and Mr Richard White - Director of Dales
