Oakley's Men travelled this evening to Headley for the first round of the County Championship. The initial exchanges favoured the hosts and with both Spencer Kerley's and Stan Mond's rinks struggling on a challenging 4 rink green, that is normally played on 3 rinks, a victory for Oakley looked unlikely. However, the rinks skipped by Ted Brown and Fred Norris were holding their own and at halfway Oakley had a narrow 2 shot lead. The Norris rink, with Graham Tompkins making his debut, then hit a purple patch and, with Mond and Kerley recovering, Oakley moved out to a 20 shot lead which they maintained until the end of the game. Oakley scores: Dave Clewer, Dave Harrison, Trevor Wearn and Ted Brown won 23-20, Eric Lamkin, John Wilson, Barry Lee and Stan Mond drew 18-18, Martin Smith, Bob Goodyear, Graham Tompkins and Fred Norris won 31-18, Malcolm Grime, Sean Lassman, Ric Newson and Spencer Kerley won 24-17
