Baroness Orczy's Troika
Between 1908 and 1909 Acol's second famous literary inhabitant, Baroness Orczy (1865-1947) (of 'Scarlet Pimpernel' fame) leased Cleve Court, an impressive mansion just beyond Acol village on the Minstor Road at Monkton (CT12 4BA). She and her husband, the painter Montagu Barstow, imported horses from her home in Hungary and drove a carriage with the horses three abreast.
That must have caused some comment among the locals! While living here she finished 'Beau Brocade' and wrote 'Nest of the Sparrowhawk' which is set in Acol.
