Freedom of The Parish of Acol, 2026
Freedom of the Parish is an honorary title bestowed by a Parish Council to individuals who have rendered exceptional service to their community. It is the highest honour that a Parish Council may award. Whilst is does not confer any legal powers, rights or privileges, it enables the recipient to use the title of "Honorary Freeman" or "Honorary Freewoman". Any decision to award will be made annually but used sparingly to maintain the significance of the award.
The Legal Powers for a Parish to make such awards come from Section 249 (5) of The Local Government Act 1972, as amended by Section 29 of the Local Democracy, Economic Development & Construction Act 2009, allowing the Council of a relevant authority to admit to be honorary freemen or honorary freewomen of the place or area for which it is the authority.
Those awarded the Freedom of the Parish of Acol receive a framed certificate marking the distinction. Their names, together with a summary of the contributions that earned the honour, are permanently inscribed on the Honours Board in Acol Village Hall.
