BEDS VPs MATCH REPORT JANUARY 14th 2026

BEDS VPs (76) MATCH REPORT JANUARY 14th 2026

January 14th 2026 was a very special day on our bowling calendar because the Bedfordshire VPs are pitting their skills against the Northamptonshire VPs for the much acclaimed “Charles Wells cup”. This trophy was donated by the brewery company during the mid 90’s and has been played for ever since, these fixtures are played at home on one year and away the next and so on. To date including todays result Northants VPs have won it 13 times whilst we have won it 9 so there was all to play for. The venue for today’s game was Kempston Park I.B.C. with their superb facilities and to them we offer our sincere thanks. The format for the game was going to be 3 rinks and 3 triples. We loaned them a player as they were unfortunately one short but a big thank you to Melanie Andrews for stepping in, this offer was much appreciated by both Associations. As the game got underway you could sense it was going to be a close game and as you can see by the end result it proved to be correct. At the halfway stage we crept ahead with the score being 43-34 in our favour and then Northants applied some pressure to try and make up the deficit. Our players held there nerve and finished winning the match 92-88. Congratulations go to all our players for a truly remarkable and enjoyable game of bowls. The highest winning rink was Peter Irons, Rosemarie Duke, Ray Phillips and masterly skipped by Gervais Cave. So well done to them all. As you are aware Kempston I. B. C. always come up with something special regarding the meal and today was no different and certainly not disappointing . Pork / beef / chicken, fresh vegetables was on the menu with a waffle, toffee sauce and a cream topping for pudding. Absolutely delicious even the Chairman of Northants VPs complimented on the quality and quantity of the meal and remarked that the next time they have to play us again can we make Kempston the venue. Compliments indeed.
