Bilton Bowling Club

Dates and News from the Diary October 2023

We hope everyone has enjoyed the summer and the 2023 season of outdoor lawn bowls. Bilton bowling club members have been active across a range of competition, playing in Warwickshire County matches, local matches against other clubs in Rugby and traditional matches against other clubs in a round of fixtures, as well as taking a shot at the early rounds of National competition and our very own Bilton internal matches. Winner or loser, new or established member of the club, we hope you’ve been able to get involved as much as you hoped for and look forward to doing it all again next year.

Bilton won back the Nuneaton Shield this year and retained the Kibworth Shield.

The men’s team brought back a respectable 4th position this year in the Coventry Six Clubs League and £156 prize money.

Putting the Green to bed.

A big thank you to all members who supported the work on the Green last week to get this ready for winter and also prepare for next season. It was not easy due to the weather conditions, but all members of the team rose to the occasion and turned out in the difficult conditions. Despite the unreliable weather 4 and ½ ton of top dressing was applied with 3 days hard work and effort supported with cups of tea and bacon butties. The club has purchased equipment which allows ongoing maintenance of the all-weather outdoor rink, so this is available to members to use throughout the winter.

Ladies v Gents Challenge.

This was a fun end of season afternoon’s bowling with 30 players pitted against each other in two teams.

Silver Award for Bilton.

Congratulations and special thanks to John G and his team of helpers as Bilton gains a silver award at this year’s Rugby in Bloom. The gardens provide us with a secluded, restful space in the middle of what can be very busy times. We all benefit hugely from John’s horticultural knowledge and skills in many ways.

The club now has its own Wi-Fi. Please ask for the password at the bar or find it on the noticeboard.

In other news - Bilton Bowling Club History 1927/28

Notes from the club minute book at this time are sparse, but throughout the winter of 27/28 there is reference made to a new Green being prepared in Mr Horton’s grounds. This would become the current site of the bowling club. Much effort was being made to raise funds to support this with references to whist drives, prize draws, a dance and a dinner. There were preparations and invitations for fixtures including Northampton and Daventry Hospital and reference to a talk from Warwickshire County Bowling Club and plans to affiliate to this. Some discussion also held on the need to prepare the Green at Bilton Hall in case the new Green was not ready for the summer of 1928.
