The 2020/21 Financial Year
The Parish Council has today published its budget for the new financial year which runs from 1st April 2020 to 31st March 2021.
Anticipated spending over the next 12 months amounts to £91,450 and this has resulted in a precept request to Mole Valley District Council of £73,090, an increase of 6.25 % compared to a year ago. The Parish Council is aware of some adverse comment this has produced and understands why some residents are unhappy with the increase.
Like everybody else, in whichever field they operate, the Parish Council is facing rising costs. The expense of maintaining the Pavilion, the Recreation Ground and the Millennium Field in Charlwood, The Withey in Hookwood and the playgrounds in both villages, takes up a large portion of the Parish Council’s income. Five part-time staff are employed and wages and pension commitments account for roughly a third of all expenditure.
Considerable expenditure is anticipated on combating the traffic problems that plague both villages on a daily basis and also to provide a much-needed car park in Charlwood. In addition Councillors are aware that significant work will have to take place to refurbish and improve both playgrounds.
The bureaucratic hurdles that need to be overcome to make progress in these different areas can be both baffling and frustrating for Parish Councillors and residents alike. Councillors would ask residents for patience while they work their way through all the different stages of the processes.
*Note: The Budget figures were approved before the Coronavirus epidemic and it seems likely that the emergency situation will have a significant impact on local authority finances.
