Keeping the Momentum

Keeping the Momentum Going

With the season just around the corner, it has already been busy at the club — more going on than you might expect.

The Open Day on the 18th April was a remarkable success, with loads of people coming down to give it a go. It was good to see so many fresh faces — some picked it up straight away, others… not quite (which, to be fair, looked similar to how I started).

That’s the best thing about days like that though — you can just turn up, have a laugh, and quickly realise that bowls is a lot harder (and a lot better) than it looks.

It was also good to see a mix of ages getting involved. The more people that come down and try it, especially juniors, the more that stereotype starts to disappear — although after last time, I’m still not fully convinced Rhys counts as a “junior.”

Off the green, there has been just as much going on. The marigold cleaning day was a proper effort, with members clearing a surprising amount of rubbish. I’ll be honest, I did not expect to see that many bin bags filled in one day — but it just shows how much people care about the club and keeping it looking right.

One thing I have enjoyed most since joining is the Saturday nights. It’s a different side to the club — just coming down, having a laugh, and getting involved in a few games, including swipe, which just happens to be a card game........When I first joined, I thought it would just be about playing, but those nights have been some of the best parts. It’s where you get to know people properly (and where the competitive side somehow still finds its way in).

After being a member for over half a season, that’s what stands out most to me. It’s not just about playing — it’s about being part of something. Whether it is helping out, having a laugh, or just being around the club, there is always something going on.

With games starting this Sunday, there’s a bit of excitement (and probably a few nerves) building. I’m looking forward to getting going again — although I’m sure there’ll be a few “interesting” shots early on while I remember what I’m doing.

If you missed the Open Day, it’s not too late to get involved. The club is always open to new players, especially juniors looking to try something different, get active, and meet new people.

Give it a go… you’ll be hitting your best shot before you know it 😉
