FAQs
New or prospective members? We think you probably want to know the answers to these questions!
Where we are located
The green and club house is at Howard Garden, Letchworth.
Where we play
We play most games within a fifteen mile radius of Letchworth, with Royston and Aston being the clubs furthest away. You can always get a lift with another player!
What to wear for bowls
The most important thing is to wear flat-soled trainers or shoes on the green - nothing that leaves tread marks or makes holes! 'Proper' bowls shoes aren't needed unless you join us as a full member. For roll-ups, any clothes you can move in will do! For matches, we provide a club shirt and you need to have either grey or white trousers or shorts (weather dependent) and probably a white jacket or jumper (weather dependent - yes, bowls is a summer game).
What kit you need
Trying us out? then we have 'woods'(bowls) for you to use. Almost everyone who joins as a full member gets their own bowls (Riverain sells them along with shoes, shorts, tape measures and chalk... as does Ebay!).
What about any additional costs?
To roll-up any time is free to social, new or full members. If you are picked to play in a match - friendly or league game - then you also pay £3 per match, and the host team usually runs a raffle of some kind at a pound a go - but you can win big prizes! Almost all clubs have a bar or give you the opportunity to make a donation for a drink, so some extra pounds might be handy for that pint or can of coke.
How to get on the green or into the club house
All members are given a key for the club house, after payment has been made for their membership. Inside the clubhouse is the key for the Green and the storage shed.
Where you can park
We have a small amount of free parking just behind us; across the road is plenty of paid parking. Bicycles can be stored inside or outside the club house, and lifts are commonly sought and offered among members to minimise the need for parking.
What else might you be asked to do
As well as supportive and well-intentioned players, the club needs additional input, and full members will be included on our Cleaning rota (twice a season in pairs, about an hour per time), as well as being encouraged to volunteer for all the millions of other jobs that go on 'behind the scenes' from hedge cutting to joining the committee or running our website.
