Road and Footpath closures

Iwade Parish Council Road and Footpath closures

Traffic Management – Grovehurst Road

Saturday 7 February, Sunday 8 February

There will be traffic control (short vehicle holds) on Swale Way south (from the gyratory to Nicholls access) between 10am to 4pm (off peak) to allow the completion of essential surfacing works. Traffic holds will be for no longer than two minutes, and traffic numbers will be monitored to prevent tail backs.

Monday 9 February (10am until 4pm)

There will be 2-way temporary traffic lights on the access to Nicholls Transport yard.  This is to surface the footpath.

Monday 9 February (8pm until 6am)

The existing Grovehurst Road bridge will be closed for the removal of lighting columns.  For the safety of the travelling public, the A249 will also need to be closed at the junction, both north and southbound. Vehicles will need to use the slip roads to exit and rejoin the A249.

Diversions

  • A249 north and southbound mainline diversion – via the north and southbound slip roads at the Grovehurst Rd junction.
  • Existing Grovehurst Rd bridge diversion – Travel southbound on A249 (towards Maidstone) exiting at the Bobbing Junction and returning northbound (towards Sheppey) exiting on the northbound exit slip road at the Grovehurst Road junction.

Wednesday 11 February (10am until 4pm)

There will be 3-way manually controlled traffic lights on Grovehurst Road north, for surfacing works into the Persimmon Estate (Pond Farm).

Thursday 12 February (10am until 4pm)

There will be 2-way manually controlled traffic lights on Swale Way.  This is for loop cutting and column erection.

Grovehurst Road Improvement Scheme completion works update

Contractors working on the upgrade of the Grovehurst Road junction are due to complete the majority of the works by early December.

Engineers will return in the New Year to complete the remaining utility connections and address any redundant chambers and ducts, before the scheme is considered complete.

Complications in the planning, poor weather conditions in the early phase of the build and works on the surrounding roads not associated with the project have meant the timeline for completion has slipped.

KCC’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Peter Osborne, said: “Our improvements to the Grovehurst Road junction are progressing well.

“We will continue to work with our contractor to make sure any further work needed to complete the project is planned to minimise further delay and disruption as much as possible.”

The A249 Grovehurst Road Improvement Scheme will unlock new homes planned along the A249 corridor from the junction with the M2 to the Isle of Sheppey.

The improvements include altering the slip and approach roads to the junction, service diversions, changing traffic signals, lighting and major earthwork operations.

This will increase capacity on the road network and provide the infrastructure needed for the proposed housing plans in Swale and is being paid for through the government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund and developer contributions.

More information about the project is available on the project website.
