A Short History of the Club
Over forty years ago, John Colborne, Millie Carter and group of bowlers wanted to form a bowling club in Lee. At first Gosport Borough Council offered no help, but later when we applied with a petition with around 600 signatures of support in favour, an offer of the lease of a plot of land was made, but the costs for the construction and its maintenance would be the responsibility of the proposed bowling club, which was accepted. The Club was registered in 1979 with John Colborne as Secretary and Colin Ford our first President. Fund raising had now become vital. Millie Carter who had previously been raising funds for her church helped considerably and this allowed the bowling green to be opened in 1985. Since then, the Club has grown in size and structure from its difficult beginnings to be the great Club it is today. This did not happen on its own but by its members. Throughout the years, bowlers, both men and women, have given hours of their time and talents to build the Club creating and maintaining the grounds and clubhouse along with all the other aspects of running a club. (Many thanks to the late John Crook for compiling this history of the Club).
