Sunday morning saw the first main event of the Priory season, the preliminary rounds of the Club Pairs.I say preliminary rounds very much tongue in cheek as there were only 12 entrants which meant 2 quarter finals and 2 semi finals, Bob Bloomfield over saw the draw while the Vice President plucked the balls out of the bag, to prevent a lop sided draw the 12 were split into skips & leads. First pairing out of the bag were Martin Eggleton & Bob Bloomfield who took on Steve Smith & Mike Turner, next up were last years pot hunter Steve Farnden teams up with Wally Somerset against the 20/21 champions Eddie Mifsud and Albie Somerset. Straight into the semi finals went Fred Hammal & Terry Meaden against Tony Cook & new bowler Randall xxxxx, who was covering an unavailable Peter Ellard.

It was a tight match on rink 2 until Steve & Mike picked up a big 5 and there was no way back for Martin & Bob. Meanwhile on rink 3 an annihilation was going on, nothing was going right for the former champions, even when holding the shot the errant skip managed to give it away and not getting on the scoreboard until the 8th end.

On Rink 4 the first semi final was underway and it was a tight affair with Tony & Randall running out winners, now they had to wait to see who they would play in the final after Smiffy & Mike took on Steve & Wally.

This time the “Champion Vanquishers” didn’t get it all their own way as the Vice Captain and Competition Secretary built up a lead, Wally was definitely struggling health wise and was forced to come off and a substitute sent on, strangely enough they picked up a 4 on the next end but it was never going to be enough to create a fight back and Steve & Mike claimed their place in the final.

After last years late withdrawal Andy Hibberd is on stand by for his second substitute final in 2 years.

Thanks go out once again for Bob Bloomfield for running another superb Pairs Competition again this year
