Poppies bringing our community together for Remembrance
A striking cascade of handmade poppies flows down from Snodland Clocktower, as our local community prepare to mark Remembrance Sunday.
Snodland Town Council had a vision, and when approaching Snodland Ladies Club to see if they were interested in a challenge, the ladies jumped at the opportunity and took on the project to knit, crochet and make felt poppies along with other individuals that dedicated their time including Crafties Group. All providing well over 5000 poppies.
The netting itself is 29 feet long (9 metres) and the width at its largest is 10 feet (3 metres).
Snodland Ladies Club, then took the task of sewing each poppy into place.
The project is a tribute remembering those who served and sacrificed.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to all the ladies whose care, dedication and hard work has made this possible and to LTSE Production for assisting us and supporting us to bring this vision to life.
If you are passing Snodland Clocktower, take a moment to pause, reflect, and appreciate what our community has created together.
We will remember them.
Welcome to the Snodland Town Council website
Snodland is situated between the North Downs to the west and the river Medway to the east. Snodland Town Council adopted its status as a Town Council in May 1988, it was originally established as a Parish Council under the Local Government Act of 1894, and the first meeting was held on Monday December 31st 1894 and is, as a Parish Council, the first level of local government for the Snodland community.
The Town Council is responsible for three public open spaces - Nevill Park, Recreation Ground and Willowside; two sportsgrounds -the Cricket Meadow and Potyns Sportsground. This includes the maintenance and replacement of play equipment and the upkeep of the grounds. The Town Council also has its own Cemetery and allotment gardens. They are also responsible for approximately 170 of the town’s streetlights, festive lighting and summer hanging baskets.
The Council offices are situated at the rear of the Devonshire Rooms in Waghorn Road and has a function room within the building that it hires out for private and business use.
The Town Council also organises special events throughout the year. These are: the annual Fete (previously Carnival) held in July, Firework display in November, Remembrance Parade in November and the Christmas Light switch on at the end of November.
