Mount Road Cemetery

Welcome to Balderton Cemetery and Garden of Remembrance

Balderton Cemetery and Garden of Remembrance provide a peaceful place for remembrance and reflection. The cemetery can be accessed via entrances on Belvoir Road and Mount Road.

Visitors are welcome throughout the year. Dogs are permitted within the cemetery; however, they must be kept on a lead at all times and owners are asked to ensure the area is kept clean and treated with respect.

Access and Opening Times

The pedestrian entrances are open at all times, allowing visitors access throughout the day.

Please note that the vehicular entrance on Belvoir Road is not available for public use and remains locked except when required for cemetery operations. Access is provided for Parish Council staff, funeral directors, memorial contractors and other authorised users carrying out work within the cemetery.

Information on burial arrangements, fees, memorials and guidance for funeral directors can be found below. If you require any further assistance, please contact the Parish Council office.

Cemetery Guidance

Reserving a Burial Space

Balderton Parish Council does not reserve burial plots in advance. Burial spaces are allocated at the time of need, subject to availability within the cemetery.

Arranging a Funeral

The Parish Council does not accept direct bookings for burials or interments. Funeral arrangements should be made through a funeral director, who will liaise with the Council on your behalf to organise the necessary cemetery bookings and paperwork.

Local funeral directors frequently used by residents include:

You are, however, free to choose any funeral director. We recommend obtaining quotes and comparing services to find the provider that best meets your needs.

Residents and Non-Residents

Balderton Cemetery is available for both residents and non-residents of the parish. Please note that fees for the burial or interment of non-residents are higher than those for parish residents.

This is because the ongoing maintenance and management of the cemetery is partly funded through the parish precept paid by Balderton residents. The reduced resident fees recognise this contribution towards the upkeep of the cemetery.

For current burial fees and charges, please refer to the Cemetery Fees and Charges Schedule.

Guidance for Funeral Directors

Booking a Funeral or Interment

Balderton Parish Council accepts bookings from all funeral directors. We regularly work with funeral directors based in Newark and the surrounding area, but we are happy to assist providers from further afield. Funeral directors who are unfamiliar with our procedures are encouraged to contact us and review the information provided on this page before making arrangements.

Fees and Payments

Information on cemetery fees and charges can be found here

The Parish Council invoices funeral directors directly for burial and interment fees. We therefore ask funeral directors to collect these costs from families as part of their funeral arrangements. Payment to the Council should be made by BACS.

Grave Digging

The Parish Council does not arrange or fund grave excavation works. Funeral directors are responsible for appointing a suitably qualified grave digger.

Where an alternative grave digger is used, arrangements for cemetery access must be agreed with the Parish Council in advance, please call 01636 703626.

Insurance and Risk Assessments

All funeral directors, grave diggers, memorial masons and other contractors undertaking work within the cemetery must provide:

  • A suitable risk assessment for the activity being undertaken.
  • Evidence of current public liability insurance.

Funeral directors are responsible for obtaining and submitting the relevant documentation for any subcontractors engaged on their behalf, including grave diggers, vehicle providers and memorial installers.

Memorials

Requirements and guidance relating to memorials, including permitted materials, dimensions and installation standards, are contained within the Memorial Application form.
