FROM BOMBS TO BAILEY BRIDGES
BISHOP MONKTON TODAY
There's a chance to find out more about the fascinating military history of Bishop Monkton and the wider Ripon area when experts from a local campaigning group come to talk at the Village Hall next month.
Jane Furse and Guy Wilson from the Ripon Military Heritage Trust will be speaking about this and the wider contribution made by the Ripon area during both World Wars and other conflicts. Also, they’ll detail the current campaign to preserve Ripon’s military heritage which is under threat from planned housing developments.
The talk will include information about the vital role played by Bishop Monkton in WW2? Bailey Bridges, clever prefabricated structures used by advancing Allied troops after D-Day, were tested here at the Army Bridging Camp, the remains of which can still be seen just outside the village.
The event is on Wednesday 11th September at 7pm in the Village Hall. Doors open 6.30pm and there will be a Cash Bar - wine and soft drinks.
Tickets cost £10 paid by cash on door (free to members of Bishop Monkton Local History Group).
