OUR VILLAGE'S GARDEN OF POPPIES
BISHOP MONKTON TODAY
Poignant in its simplicity, the village's very own, and very individual, Poppy Field of Remembrance certainly gave those walking around the village cause to stop, reflect, pause and consider. Children on their daily journeys to and from school were brought by their parents to look at the poppies and judging by the amount of children who gathered on Friday after school finished, it was very much something they all wanted to see and know more about.
For a few days over the Armistice weekend, in the centre of the village, outside Burngarth, down one side of the beck, bright red poppies could be seen “growing”, standing proudly alongside two soldier silhouettes, smartly and newly painted black for the occasion. People, whether they be villagers, walkers, or simply passers-by, were invited to take a poppy, place a small donation in the ammunition box specially sourced from the internet for the occasion, and then gently hammer the poppy, using the rubber mallet provided, into the grass besides the beck.
And very generous indeed were the contributions which included several high denomination notes as well as a donation from a visitor from Scotland. Over the seven days that the poppies were displayed, a total of just over £332 was collected with 130 poppies placed into the grass. Two hundred poppies were originally made by the owner of Burngarth, Dave Molyneux, who utilised the bases and tops of two litre bottles of water to create the distinctively crimson symbolic flowers. He now intends to repeat this tribute, if he possibly can, on an annual basis, having been overwhelmed by the response, especially from the children who he says “really embraced Remembrance. They were the best and loved getting involved”.
Poppies could be taken home by anyone wishing to do so after the display had been dismantled.
The collection was handed over in the village to a representative of the Ripon branch of the Royal British Legion on Tuesday afternoon who expressed their appreciation for the total raised.
With Pride, We Remembered.
