All Saints Church
All Saints' Church occupies a central position in the village of Dummer, close to the historic Queen Inn. A church has stood on this site since at least the 11th century, with its existence recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. The present building's oldest surviving feature is the 12th century south doorway, now reworked into a round-headed window.
The church is Grade I listed and is rich in historic features. Highlights include a rare 15th century rood canopy, a 16th century gallery, and one of the oldest pulpits in England. There is also a wooden bell tower housing five bells, the oldest of which is dated 1590. Notable furnishings recorded by architectural historians include two stained glass windows by Kempe, dating from 1895 and 1898, along with older monuments and brasses.
The church has a charming literary connection: Jane Austen is said to have worshipped here when visiting her friends, the Terry family, who lived next door.
