Coaching Courses

EBCS Courses

Essex County Bowling Association policy is to recommend that all clubs have a minimum of two
coaches ideally one Coach Bowls and one English Bowls Coaching Society (EBCS).
To help clubs achieve this the EBCA has arranged the following:

8th September 2025 (Revised 7 Oct 25)

Course dates shown at end of this page

EBCA Winter Courses 25-26

The EBCA will be running a winter training programme (dates at end of this page).

I have included details of courses we have confirmed and those that we are working on so that you can plan to attend relevant sessions etc.

Courses are open to all coaches registered with the EBCA and who fully comply with County Coaching Policy.

EBCS Level 1

The four-day EBCS level 1 courses are for bowlers wishing to become coaches.  The course covers delivery, line and length coaching, coaching techniques and safeguarding.  This is the first step in coaching and qualifies successful attendees to coach new bowlers and develop less experienced club members. The cost is £60 which cover the four days and all EBCS and EBCA booklets.

Bowlers attending the EBCS level 1 courses will be required to register with EBCS (small fee) and with our County Coaching database (free) on completion of their course.

EBCS Level 2

This course is for both EBCS and Coach Bowls level 1 coaches who have a minimum of two years active coaching experience. The course builds on your level one coaching qualification and covers the skills and knowledge needed to coach experienced bowlers. The cost is £60 which cover the four days and all EBCS and EBCA booklets.

EBCS Level 3

The Level 3 course covers all the skills needed to coach high performance bowler, develop team play, use of video and assisting level 1 and 2 coaches.

This course is open to EBCS level 2 coaches with a minimum of 2 years level 2 active coaching experience. The course will involve 7 training sessions and a practice day and an assessment day. The cost of the course is £15 per session, payable each session. The practice and assessment days are free.

Coaches Refresher Sessions

We will organise sessions in Jan, March and April for all coaches to come along and share ideas, tips, and best practice. Although called a refreshers session we really want these sessions to be about team building and improving our coaching skills.  Cost is £15 per session.

Coach Bowls Course

Coach Bowls run Level 1 and a Level 2 coaching courses, First Aid and Safeguarding courses.  Anyone interested in any of these courses can find full details and registration procedure on the Coach Bowls website.

Please note that EBCS level 1 coaches can attend Coach Bowls Level 2 courses.

Disability Bowls

The EBCA will with the assistance of other coaches be running at least one coaching session focused on helping bowlers with disabilities. We consider this as a very important part of our coaching activities as it often helps bowlers extend their bowling careers. Please try to find time to come along.

Back to Bowls Refresher Session: Bowlers

This is new this year. The purpose of these sessions will be to give bowlers a chance to get some coaching and practice in at the start of the next outdoor season. The sessions will be held as soon as outdoor rinks become available. Dates and locations will be announced closer to the new season.

Markers Awareness Course

I have asked the English Bowls Umpires Association (EBUA) is run another course.  We are hoping they can confirm shortly. The course will be open to all coaches and is limited to 20 places. The cost is £15. I will send out more information on receipt of confirmation however as the course is limited to 20, I recommend that you register your interest early.

Safeguarding Course

We have arranged Safeguarding training for Coaches and for Club Officials in November and again in April. This is to enable anyone in a coaching or club official position who has not already completed relevant training to comply with County, Bowls England and EIBS policy. Each session last 3 hrs and cost £15.
