The Parkland
History and Purpose
The Parkland, Lower Hartlip Road, Lower Hartlip
This especially beautiful area of land is situated in Hartlip Conservation Area and is an Article 4 Area. It therefore has no permitted development rights.
Originally, The Parkland was part of the Park belonging to The Parsonage and, in dry times, the flint track which was the carriage drive can still be detected. This drive provided access to the coach house and stables from the Lower Road.
The land was purchased by Hartlip Parish Council in 1983 so that it could be preserved as a tranquil and unspoilt green space for present and future generations to enjoy and value.
The Parkland is there for parish residents to use in appropriate ways and especially to appreciate the peaceful atmosphere it provides.
At one stage tennis courts were situated on The Parkland and enjoyed by residents.
The space has been used for the Parish Fete, Parish BBQ’s, Community Picnics and games and has been enjoyed by Hartlip School as well as being a special place for residents to simply wander and relax.
A public footpath runs along the north side and is much used by walkers.
Hartlip residents using the area should be mindful of the fact that, at present, horses graze on the land to keep the grass down and provide some revenue to assist Hartlip Parish Council in maintaining The Parkland.
Enquiries about grazing should be addressed to the Clerk to the Parish Council.
The presence of horses does not preclude parishioners from using it: it is parish land.
