OAKHAM BOWLING CLUB
AUGUST NEWSLETTER
My goodness the year is slipping away fast isn’t it? It’s been a very eventful few weeks with some members doing well in the county competitions. Good luck to those who are still in the mix, particularly Nicola who is through to the final of the champion of champions’ event.
We’ve had a fantastic number of new members joining the club, mainly as a result of our Open Day. To you all we say ‘welcome’ and hope you will enjoy getting to grips with this amazing game and enjoy being part of our bowling family.
Club competitions are reaching the final stages, although I did notice today there are still several games not yet played that should have been completed in July. The weather has certainly played havoc with the play by dates and Stuart has been very understanding. Now that the weather is more comfortable I’m sure he’d be glad if everyone could catch up with these matches now.
Next club event is the Zero Bowls tournament on Thursday 5th August. It’s a 10.30am start for this one and Simon and Fiona will be firing up the BBQ for us. BBQ food only available to players who have pre-ordered. Sylvia will be holding a raffle to raise money for her President’s day and chosen charity The Alzheimer’s Association. Tickets will be £1 per strip and the draw will take place during the lunch interval, so don’t forget to bring your money. Even if you are not playing then hopefully you’ll be coming down to watch and to buy some raffle tickets.
On Wednesday evening 12th August the A Team are playing in the semi-final of the Rosebowl competition. Spectators are very much encouraged to cheer the team on. Unfortunately this clashes with a prebooked event in the clubhouse by Slimming World. We obviously could not cancel them and so we will be screening off the clubhouse from the bar area down so that their meeting can go ahead, and we can use the bar facilities before and during the game. We would ask that you be as quiet as possible when at the bar so that we do not disturb the meeting. They will also be set up in the ladies’ changing room, but you will still be able to use the toilet facilities. The meeting will be finished by the time the game is completed so these arrangements will only be in place whilst the Slimming World meeting is taking place.
There are plenty of friendly games still to be played and the availability sheets are on the boards. Please put your names down if you are able to play and make life easy for the team captains.
The availability list for President’s Day will be on the board on Tuesday. You will remember that the date has been changed to Sunday 23rd August commencing 2pm. All full members are eligible to play. Get your name down early to avoid disappointment. It would be lovely to see some new members putting their names down to play in this fun afternoon.
I hope you will have noticed the slight increase in price for the teas and coffees made in the kitchen. This is the first increase for many years so we don’t expect too many complaints! There is also a coffee machine in the kitchen now and cups of coffee from this are charged at £1 per cup please. We are also trialling sachets of long-life milk, which are kept in the fridge, and would be interested to have your comments. I’ve used them a couple of times and think they are a very acceptable alternative to fresh milk.
Please watch your emails tomorrow for a possible announcement regarding Triples night with yet another potential amber weather warning.
Stay cool and hydrated
