OAKHAM BOWLING CLUB

SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

Well here we are fast approaching the end of the season, and what a season it has been for us.  We have retained the Rose Bowl trophy with a magnificent win at Stamford Town BC. 

Nicola was a member of the Leicestershire & Rutland ladies’ team that won The John’s National competition at Leamington.  A tremendous victory resulting in much celebrating as they had not won this competition for 33 years.   Nicola then went on to win a fantastic Champion of Champions final at Blaby Bowls Club.  

Colin had a good run at Leamington reaching the quarter finals in the Para Singles and  just missing out reaching the Para Pairs quarter finals by 4 shots as the best runner up from the 5 groups. 

OBC retained the Kings Cup and were runners up in the Melton Triples League.  In the Stamford league Oakham A narrowly missed being runners up in Division 1 and the Delta team finished a very creditable 7th  in Division 2. 

Paul & Matt reached the final of the Stamford Pairs and finished second.

Our first final’s day on Sunday was an excellent affair and some fantastic games to watch.  The second final’s day is on Sunday 13th , 10.30am and 2.30pm.  Please come down if you can.  It’s so much better for the players to have spectators cheering them on.  There’s a packed programme with 4 games in the morning and 3 in the afternoon.  I can promise some great bowling and you might even pick up some tips.

There are a few friendly games left, so let the match captains know if you can play, so that they are not hunting round for players at the last minute.

The Ozzie Pairs and Zero Bowls have been great competitions and enjoyed by all.  The last Ozzie Pairs will be on Thursday 24th September.  If you’re not playing, why not come down and enjoy the fun.  Big thank you to Colin and Eddie for running these two events.

For the first time we are having an end of season CANDLELIT BOWLS event on Saturday 3rd October.  The availability sheet is on the board and is filling up very fast, so if you want to play you need to get your name down asap.  There will be a meal beforehand and if you haven’t already, please let Jane know if you can help with this, and if you can provide a pudding as well all the better.  I’ve just bought a great head torch on Amazon!!

When the season closes the SHORT MAT EVENINGS will commence again.  The first one is on THURSDAY 15th OCTOBER commencing 7pm.  These are incredibly popular and our thanks to Lesley for taking over from long time organiser Kath in keeping these evenings going.  Any queries please contact Lesley direct.

PRESENTATION LUNCH is taking place on Sunday 18th October this year.  The list will be on the board soon.  Priority obviously will be given to prize winners, but everyone is welcome to attend.  As usual I am looking for volunteer chefs to make our traditional Shepherds’ pies.  Please let me know if you are prepared to cook one.

The Oakham Twinning Association are holding a reception for visitors from Barmstedt and their host families on Thursday 10th September from 5.30-8pm, so please be aware the clubhouse will not be available to members at this time.

Slimming World has also booked the clubhouse as their permanent meeting place now.  Their meeting times are 6pm-8.15pm on Wednesday evenings and 8.30am-12.15pm on Thursday mornings.  The changing rooms will always be available but we ask members not to disturb the meeting by entering the main clubhouse please.  I would reassure members that matches will take priority on Wednesday evenings and so the Melton & District Triples and Kings Cup home games will not be affected.  Other bookings are listed on the Calendar displayed on the notice board outside the kitchen.

The Green will close for the season following the Chummy morning on 4th October.  Sean will be running two Saturday working gangs to put the green to bed for the winter and would be grateful for help with this.  Please come down to the club on Saturday 10th and 17th October at 9am and you will be allocated a job.  More hands make light work, so don’t leave it to everyone else, come and do your bit for the club.

We do hope to be running some social events throughout the autumn/winter but dates are yet to be confirmed.  If you have any ideas about social events or would like to put one on for the club, then please let me know.  Most events usually take place in the evening, but would you be interested in afternoon events if we organised them?

The Club’s AGM will take place on Friday 27th November at 7pm.

STOP PRESS:  You will have seen from my email last night that Oakham Town Council approved unanimously to grant a 99-year lease to the Bowls club and Tennis club subject to satisfactory legal advice, with a ground rent of £100 index linked.   Lots of work still to do but thank goodness we are now moving in the right direction.
