March News

Fixtures for 2024 are complete and the Opening Drive will be on Saturday 13th April with Fixture Cards forthcoming.

We would like to thank Chris Stonely for mending the leak in the Bowls Club kitchen – on Christmas Day – would you believe!   A big thank you also to Ron Colyer who carved an excellent large wooden knife to accompany the spoon & fork we already have.  These hang on the wall in the Clubhouse and are presented for our indoor short mat competitions.  Our Short Mat competitions roll ever-onwards and are much enjoyed.

The Bonus Ball winners for December were Eve Millidge & Jim Dobson and for January, Jill Ridley & Mark Leonard.

For our ‘eco quest’ we are investigating solar panels so expect an update on this.

On a sad note, it is with regret that I report the death of Jack Sawyer (96) who passed away peacefully in his sleep on 22nd January at Leigh.  He, and his wife Sylvia, were very long serving and respected members of the Club.

September News

The leagues have now been completed and it was a case of nearly, not quite, for the evening Swindon and District teams.  The men came second to Westlecot by only one point whilst the women finished third behind Supermarine and Highworth.   The Ashley Baker team finished 7th but was well supported the whole season

The invitation floodlit competition was well supported, as always. The weather was kind which is always appreciated when the light goes early. Thanks to Roy Dixon for organising this tournament. Thanks too, to Pearce Funeral Directors for their generous sponsorship of the event. The winners will be announced in next month’s report.

Looking ahead:

  • the annual Ladies v Gents match will be played on Saturday 16th September
  • Club competition finals will take place on Friday 22nd September (5.30pm) and Saturday 23rd from 10am – 6pm.
  • The Closing Drive is on Sunday 24th September

Looking back over the season, Shrivenham has put in some great performances, at club, league and County level. Hopefully we can build on these in the future and have even greater success next year.
