Local Recycling

Recycling is an essential part of sustainable living.

When you recycle your waste or unwanted items they are prevented from ending up in landfill or from being incinerated. Hampshire County Council sends 5% of its non-recyclable waste to landfill and the remainder is incinerated. Once in landfill, your waste takes many years to decompose and has a massive impact on our environment, causing climate change from the emission of gases, contaminating the soil and water courses, and causing harm to our wildlife from ingesting rubbish.

The majority of non-recyclable waste from the Bourne Valley is collected by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and incinerated. Although this is being touted as the "greener" solution to our waste problem, many believe that incineration will become more carbon-intensive as well as a major source of toxic air pollution.

Here is a report highlighting "The Dirty Truth about Your Rubbish" by Channel 4's Dispatches.

The 4'Rs Approach to reducing your waste

So we all have to re-think what we do with our rubbish and the best way is by adopting the 4 R's approach: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Repurpose. Using this approach can often raise money for charity and enable your waste to have a new and useful life for yourself or others.

Please bear in mind that much of what you put in the general rubbish bin at Andover Household Recycling Centre will go to landfill so try to recycle as much of your household waste as possible.

What can be recycled in your green bins?

There are only 5 items that Basingstoke and Deane want to see in our Green Recycling Bins:

  1. Tins and Cans (Drink cans, food tins, pet food cans, sweet and biscuit tins - just give them a quick rinse. Leave lids attached or place within the emptied, clean container).
  2. Aerosols (e.g. deodorant, air freshener sprays, but NOT camping gas cylinders or with  hazardous waste symbols - an orange skull and crossbones e.g. oven cleaner)
  3. Paper and Magazines (Newspapers, magazines, junk mail, catalogues, envelopes. battered old paperbacks. NOT shredded paper, glittery or foil gift wrap, wet or soiled paper, tissues, paper towels, photographs)
  4. Cardboard (e.g. cereal boxes or similar. Larger cardboard boxes should be broken down. Remove wrapping tape and staples. Don't add soiled/greasy items such as takeaway boxes)
  5. Plastic bottles and lids (all bottles such as drinks, shampoo, milk, cleaning products etc. Rinsed and squashed, lids can be left on, including pump and trigger sprays. NO other plastic - just bottle shaped)

Do not put any items in large plastic bags as these will be treated as rubbish and incinerated. Everything must be clean and loose in the bin. Wrongly placed items in your recycling have to be manually removed, costing extra money, plus they can get stuck in the machinery.

This link takes you to Basingstoke and Dean's recycling page: What You Can Recycle in Your Green Bins

If I can't put it in my Green Bin, how do I recycle it?

Recycling can be a bit of a minefield. So to make it easier we have put together an A - Z Guide (below) to local recycling for items you cannot put in your Green Recycling Bins.

A little note on Soft Plastics!

All supermarkets are now recycling soft plastics and have recycling bins somewhere in their stores.

Soft plastics are easy to identify. If it screws up easily and then regains its shape, it is a soft plastic and can be recycled at your local supermarket.

So Yes to :

Bubble wrap, plastic carrier bags, dry cleaning bags, bread and frozen food bags, cereal liners, peelable food lids such as on yoghurt pots, shrink wrap, joiners from multi-packs, all baby or pet food pouches, biscuit and sweet wrappers, crisp packets (metallic-looking plastic is now okay), magazine wrappers, clean frozen food bags and crackly plastic such as flower or greeting card wrappers.

But No to:

Biodegradable or compostable bags, any dirty bags, blister packs, foam or polystyrene.

At last Local Hard Plastics Recycling!

A specialist local company doing high-specification recycling of hard plastics has opened it's doors to help the public recycle their own food trays and pots, plant pots, screw top lids and any other rigid plastic. They will sort it into the numerous types of plastic on site, so there is no need to peer for obscure numbers. The only stipulation is that it does have to be clean. Just bag it up in as large a bag as you can find. Very exciting POLYSTYRENE or styrofoam can also be recycled by the company, but it must be kept separate from other plastics. We all know the ghastly expanded packing stuff in its many forms which is seen littering building sites and nearby hedges. There is also a more malleable sheet form used in packaging that they will take.

The company is called Regenthill Ltd. and is on Fyfield Road in Weyhill SP11 8DN. This is a lane just off the Amesbury Road to Hilliers Garden centre opposite Millway Nursing Home and a few minutes away from The Weyhill Fair with it's cafe, craft shops and zero waste shop so an occasional drop off can be incorporated into other visits.

It is open to the public for drop off  Mondays to Fridays 8.30am to 4.30.pm. The telephone number is 01264 771519. One needs to give them a ring during the day to check there is no problem with deliveries. Regenthill is a few yards along Fifield Road on the left with a sign fairly high up in the hedge as in the picture, go straight down to the metal gates and push the intercom or phone to get the automatic gates opened. The office is immediately on the left for handover. Simple as that!
