75 Years of Air Cadets

USWORTH AIR CADETS 1941 - 2016

It was 75 years ago that one of Usworth's first cadet recruits, one Alfred Ibbitson, joined the then ‘2214 (Castletown & District)’ squadron, based in the Castletown district of Sunderland.

He heard the original BBC radio broadcast calling for recruits.

The Air Training Corps formed on 5th February 1941. He later joined the RAF and after the war came back to the squadron ( then 2214 (USWORTH) Squadron – having moved to RAF Usworth – a district of Washington) and eventually became its Commanding Officer in the 1950’s.

Since then many cadets have passed through its doors, each seeking the essence of the Air Training Corps motto – ‘Venture Adventure’. Read the squadron’s story in our fully illustrated history book.
