Wilder Hook is a small group based in Hook, in NE Hampshire.

Are aims are:

  • improving the biodiversity of wild, public areas in Hook
  • increasing abundance of the wildlife that already exists in Hook
  • encourage local community involvement in wildlife activities

We do this by

  • linking areas by creating wildlife corridors
  • sow wildflower meadows, plant trees & wild flowers
  • create habitat piles, dead hedges and beetle banks etc
  • survey for flora/fauna - this is how we know what we have locally
  • remove invasive species if necessary eg on Mitchells Field

We have a number of projects - this includes looking after Mitchells Field, where we have a wild flower meadow, and where we have a Bioblitz every summer, we also have various work parties to help.  For example when there are storms or we coppice, the wood is used to create dead hedges and beetle banks, and you can join one of our work parties, and perhaps use some of the ideas on a smaller scale in your garden.

In Hook we are lucky, we have a number of things which are nationally rare, but locally abundant - some are found on Bartley Heath or Bassett's Mead, and some are on some of the verges around Hook.  Have you seen glow worms or orchids or evidence of dormice?  Perhaps you may want to join us on one of our nature walks?  or come along to our Bioblitz and see what you can find?
