VILLAGE HISTORY

In 1086 the village name was Barnet-Juxta-Blidas, changing through the years to Barneby Super Le Moor, Barnbie On The Moor, Barnebi, to its present name Barnby Moor.  The most used Norse suffix ‘by’ (meaning a farm) Barn from ‘Beorn’ a town.  The addition of Moor is obvious as at this time the land around was a mixture of woods, moor and fen.  Blidas ( Blyth ) a village quite near.  In the thirteenth century many land owners, including Wyot De Barneby and his heirs released land and woods to the Convent of the Benedictines of St Mary of Blyth.  Tournaments were held in this area and many humble spectators came to watch the gallants who came from manor and castle afar.
