Absent Friends
The Absent Friends Shield was donated by Lorna Dockerill in memory of her husband Leo Dockerill; both were members of the club.
The yellow rose growing on the fence to the west of the green was planted in memory of Leo Dockerill.
Absent Friends is a competition with teams drawn at random using discs or tokens to decide where each player will be within the team:
The tokens are drawn from a hat by each player and are either red or black, they identify the rink, the team and the position of the player (lead, second or skip).
Games can be Fours, Triples or Doubles depending on the numbers of members attending the event, an example (from 2026 season) is shown in the table below.
Each player carries a scorecard and records his team's score writing down the points for and points against at the end of each game.
The winner is the player with the highest number of total shots. (Trevor)
If more than one player has the same number of shots the number of shots against is taken into account to decide the total. (Trevor)
The winner is the person with the highest net score having subtracted the points against from the points for. (John Collins)
In the event there is still no overall winner players will play end extra end to settle the result, in the 2026 event 2 woods each on rink 2 was the format for the 'decider' end.
The tokens are drawn from a hat by each player and each player carries a scorecard. The player records his team's score writing down the points for and points against. The winner is the person with the highest net score having subtracted the points against from the points for.
