St George's Church today
St George’s Church
St George’s is a much-loved church in the small town of Clun. The town grew up around the Anglo-Saxon church and later castle, both of which sit above the town on opposite hills either side of the river and medieval pack-horse bridge.
The regular church congregation is small but our support within the community is great. The church is important not only because it is a place of worship, well attended at ‘special’ services such as harvest, Christmas and Easter but it is valued as a place for baptisms, weddings and funerals at which mourners in this close farming community can number over 200. It is also valued for its heritage as a Grade II* listed building and our commitment to community use. The building is open each day and we have many visitors both local and tourists.
The church has always been popular for its exhibitions and community events such as craft fairs and concerts.
In December 2023 the heating in church broke down completely. This has been a great problem for us and we have been researching an alternative efficient and cost-effective system which complies with the national Church of England’s commitment to working towards net zero carbon. Progress is slow but we have now identified the way forward. This will require major funds, perhaps only affordable if we receive help through grant givers such as the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The breakdown of our heating boiler over two years ago means there has been no heating in the church. This has not only resulted in damage to the building but has also limited what we have been able to offer our community.
The Friends of St George’s Scheme
In 2025 we relaunched our ‘Friends of St George’s’ scheme and have had great support from our community who have expressed their commitment to saving this historic building. Supporters receive a regular newsletter. Donations to the Friends Scheme are for the use only of the building to help renovate and repair it. They are ring-fenced within the church accounts.
Please browse our photographs which illustrate the challenges over the last 15+ years to show how we have responded to the needs of our building. Other pages show how St George’s Church has been enjoyed by our community. The lack of heating has not dampened our spirits or limited our worship but it has restricted what we can offer to our community. It is our vision once again to make our building warm and welcoming to restore and expand what we can offer to our town and valley and to our visitors and tourists. Please consider joining the Friends Scheme. . Forms are always available at the back of the church. Or contact our churchwarden Joan Kerry at saintgeorgesclun@gmail.com
