Clun Memorial Hall
Clun & District Memorial Hall & Playing Fields Charity, (No. 507032) is a valued community facility located in the centre of the town, serving the residents of the Clun Valley and its environs. It is run by volunteers and offers flexible spaces, suitable for a wide range of uses.
The original Memorial Hall was built in 1920, in memory of those who fought in WWI and was located on Enfield Street. A larger hall was erected in 1989, and the current trust was formed in 1991, through the amalgamation of the New Memorial Hall Trust and the Playing Fields Association.
Our founding document: states that: "The object of the Charity shall be the provision and maintenance of a village hall and recreation ground for the use of the inhabitants of the Parish of Clun and the neighbourhood thereof, without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, with the object of improving the conditions of life, of the said inhabitants."
The hall has always performed an important function at the heart of the community, enabling many activities. It gives social cohesion to the community, providing facilities for regular sporting activities (badminton, table tennis, Zumba, indoor bowls etc), weekly mother, toddler and baby groups and a regular programme of live music events. It acts as a rural cinema, under the 'Flicks in the Sticks' branding and hosts an active and growing, amateur dramatic society (CADS), which brings people of all ages and backgrounds together. The grounds (6.5 acres) incorporate a football field, woodland, children's playground and large car park, fully used by residents and visitors alike. Our activities cater for all ages and are totally inclusive.
In March 2023 we were delighted to receive an award from the High Sheriff of Shropshire, (Selina Graham) "In recognition of great and valuable services to the community, recognising the appreciation of the residents and people of Shropshire for activity and contribution in enhancing the life of the community." Since then, we have continued to improve both the building and the grounds, paying particular attention to the biodiversity of the site; planting trees, creating paths, erecting bird and bat boxes and a bird-feeding station, where over 50 species of bird have been recorded, including several on the at-risk list.
We are always on the lookout for active volunteers.
