Garden Science Trust (Charity Number: 1079324) is a small charity based at the Green Britain Centre in Swaffham, Norfolk. We work mainly with adults with learning difficulties and those with other barriers to education and employment. As well as teaching gardening skills and an understanding of plants, an awareness of the environment and how we interact with it, we also teach basic science skills, learning through experimentation and the collection of data - something rarely offered to people with learning difficulties. We run two Art and Crafts sessions every week in our classroom. We are also very excited about our new Education course called Elementals which we hope will run and run so we can help our lovely service users with their literacy, numeracy and independent living skills as well as working closely with them individually helping them on their personal lifelong learning journey. So many of them have had a bad experience of education but we believe learning can and should be accessed at any time and it's never too late.
We work very closely with the Volunteering Matters Vocal Project based in Downham Market and we helped set up the ESCAPE Project, a local community allotment now run by Family Action.
GST works with our service users and volunteers in the organic heritage gardens at the Green Britain Centre where we have a portacabin classroom and the shared use of two polytunnels and a large productive garden where we grow an ever changing mix of vegetables, garden flowers and native plants.
We are always keen to meet new volunteers so if you would like to come along and work with us in any capacity or you think you may be able to help us in any way please contact Pat on 01760 726746 or email us at office@gardensciencetrust.co.uk.
