'Halling Then and Now' video series
Halling Historical Society is pleased to present, collected in one place and by kind permission of the originator Stu Cunningham, almost the entire set of 'Then & Now' videos which look back at Halling in past times and compare with Halling around 2011. Stu spent around 200 hours putting the videos together around 2011, cleverly merging video or photos of that time with photos of the same scene in the village going back many years, in some cases back to the 1800s. They are a fabulous collection and older villagers will recognise themselves say at school or village events of many years ago, or their friends or family.
Stu says "I’ve always been local, (Halling, Snodland, West Malling, Halling again now I’m back in Snodland again). My Family have lived in the village for generations. (Crowhursts & Adkins) . My Great Great Grandfather Walter Crowhurst is shown in Part 2 at Rose Cottage in Upper Halling. My Great Grandfather Percy Crowhurst is shown in the same video wearing his WW1 uniform before he was sent to the front, unfortunately his younger brother didn’t make it (Bertie). His name in on the war memorial in Lower Halling. Percy worked at Lee’s Cement Works and then Holborough works with his four sons, Jim, Mick, Wimp and Des, (Des Crowhurst was my Grandad & Vera Crowhurst nee Adkins was my Nan). They lived at 12 Houses, Barn Meadow, Monarch Hill, Meadow Crescent, Vicarage Close and finally Vicarage Road.
My interest in local history is inspired by my grandparents and Ted Gowers and Derek Church’s book 'Across the Low Meadow', and Ted’s talks at various Historical Society meetings.
The video series is dedicated to Ted Gowers.
I started recording the videos properly in 2011 and wanted to document the changes, (but as time goes on they are of course becoming already historic themselves).
At the very beginning in 2011 I was also trying to compile the photos shared to the Facebook group that Paul Bullivant and I had created ‘Old Pictures of Halling’. People were (& still are) so very generous with the photos they shared but it was so difficult to find anything on the group in any kind of order.
So the plan was to try and show the difference between ‘Then & Now’ using the group photos as well as some personal family photos mixed with modern video.
For all 11 ‘tour’ videos and a few extras, (School Centenary 2 parts) It took just over a year and easily over 200 hours to edit".
Ahem . . .. .the astute may notice no Part 3 below . . . . .that's because YouTube objected to the music Stu used as background . .and took down that video from the site . . ..shame!
So, sit back with a good cuppa, and absorb yourself in the Halling of the past . . . . . . . . . .for each video just click on the link in blue . . . ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
