New Postcard added to website
Memories of Alton, Hampshire
A postcard has been added to the Holybourne page, in the local villages A-K section of the website.
The photograph was taken by someone stood on what is today the triangular section of grass opposite 220 / 222 London Road, Holybourne. The postcard was posted to an address in Isham a village near Kettering on the 30th August 1926 (100 years ago yesterday!)
The road running left to right would have been the main road prior to the building of the bypass, with traffic passing through Alton and Holybourne on its way to Bentley and beyond. Hidden from view but which would be in the bottom left corner of the image is the road to Binsted which would have taken you under the railway bridge and over the River Wey.
The 1925 Electoral Register records families with these surnames living at Cuckoos Corner: Andrews, Bone, Booker, Frampton, Ham, Johnson, Moffat, Phillips and Pither.
The Alton Herald published an article about Cuckoos Corner by Jane Hurst last month, which you can read here: Peeps into the Past: The history behind Holybourne’s Cuckoo’s Corner | Alton Herald
