St Peter's Church
St Peter’s Church stands on the hillside south of the Wallop Brook and is a prominent historic landmark within Over Wallop. Although now partially screened by trees, it would originally have been a dominant feature in the landscape.
The church forms part of a joint benefice with St Andrew’s Church, Nether Wallop.

History
St Peter’s Church dates from the 12th century and became a separate parish in 1291. In the 14th century, a pension of thirty shillings was paid to the Treasurer of York Minster, reflecting its historic ecclesiastical links.
In 1342, the church came into the possession of Richard de Wallop and has remained connected with his descendants to the present day.
The church was significantly restored in 1866 under the direction of the architect Ewan Christian Pearson, known for his work on Truro Cathedral. These Victorian alterations included the distinctive saddleback roof on the tower.
The restoration was funded by the Rev. Henry Fellowes, a relative of the Wallop family.
Architecture & Interior
Although the building is of Norman origin, much of its appearance reflects later restoration work from the 19th century.
Notable features include:
- A surviving 17th-century bench located in the north aisle
- Victorian restoration elements throughout the interior
- A traditional layout consistent with historic parish churches in the region
The church is capable of seating approximately 150 people in pews, with additional seating available for larger services such as Remembrance Sunday.
Parish & Community
St Peter’s Church serves the local community as part of the wider parish network. The church continues to host regular services, seasonal events, and community gatherings.
Historical parish registers date back to 1538 and are now held at the Hampshire Register Office.
The parish sits within a rural community close to Middle Wallop and the Army Air Corps Centre.
