Backfilling the Trench

To combat the poor ground conditions, particularly during damp weather the trench was lined with a semi-permeable GeoTek membrane. It was then back filled with 3" of crushed concrete which was tamped and then followed by a further 3" of crushed concrete and tamped again. Onto this was laid 3" of 20mm grade carboniferous limestone, or ballast! This was also tamped and levelled to make it ready for track laying.
