The year 2016

What have the juniors of Sawtry been up to this past year...

Despite some sessions being cancelled due to bad weather we have had a brilliant season and have seen an improvement by all the juniors. We manage to complete all the Friday morning sessions and many of the juniors thoroughly enjoyed the activities put together by our senior coaches. Not to mention the Wednesday afternoons; we have been encouraging the juniors and they have all said they have enjoyed their groups, we aim to provide a positive session for all the children to enjoy.

Our annual junior singles competition saw two very tough finals that saw the club impressed by the talent we have. The first final saw Josh Lawman and Thomas Whitaker play each other in the younger age bracket. Despite the bad weather the to boys played very well and we saw Thomas win and earn a place in the next age bracket up with our more experience juniors. In the older age bracket we saw Toby Furzeland play Bradly Herbert the weather for these two boys was an improvement and Toby came out on top winning the final match. The club would like to say well done to Toby as he is the only junior to ever win this competition four times and despite not knowing many juniors he has also become a good role model for the juniors of Sawtry.

During the year we saw, one member of the club who has just progressed into the senior section into the club, reached the national level in the under 25's singles. Matt was well supported and members of the club and went down to watch his matches in Skegness, he has done the club proud and has been a brilliant role model to the children of the club. Matt has also began to help coach the younger children and has been given them all brilliant advice.

Not to mention we saw the juniors out on the rink in their new junior tops sponsored by the co-operative funeral in Sawtry. We are extremely proud of how well these juniors have been when playing matches and representing the club well.

This year we placed third in the junior league, unfortunately it is not as high we have placed in previous years but we had a new team and the club aims to bring these up to the highest level to what the old junior league team was. However, these juniors had a touch few matches in the qualifiers and the coaches of Sawtry are very proud of what they have achieved, the juniors that represented us in these matches were; Toby Furzeland, Bradley Herbert, Maddy Leader, Lewis Lawman and Thomas Whitaker. This will be Toby's last year in the junior section of Sawtry and District bowls club and we wish him the very best when he progresses up into the senior section of the club.

This year we celebrated the success of all the juniors this year and we had a brilliant turn out. All the coaches would like to say a massive congratulations to all those who participated this year and to all those who have helped throughout the season. Overall, we have had a very good season and a special mention goes to Bernie Shannon for all the work he has put into working with the juniors and we are all extremely grateful for all the work he has put into the juniors.
