The much-anticipated return to some form of competitive bowling took place on Yorkshire Day. 8 pairs played under C-19 guidelines and thoroughly enjoyed their competition. Playing for one hour or 11 ends, whichever is the shorter saw victories for the Hirsts, the Conways, the very experienced pair of Glew & Redfearn and the closest match saw Jan & Richard win 10-8.

Prior to the semi-finals a spider event took place for a bottle of whisky - Wendy S had the wood closest to the jack.

The semis took place after light refreshments prepared by Wendy. Both semis saw early leads being established by the Conways and Glew/Redfearn pairing. The Hirst’s clawed their way back but in the end the Conway’s moved through to the final whilst the Glew Redfearn pairing sustained their lead with some excellent bowling.

The finals saw the Conways against the Glew & Redfearn pairing. It was a keenly fought contest with both pairs gaining early success. After three ends, Glew & Redfearn began to exert pressure. this was increased by a superb wood from Redfearn which turned an end loss into victory. The Conway’s clawed their way back. But in the end, they ran out of time and lost by 9-4.

Trophies were presented to both winners and runners up, whilst being aware of social distancing. In addition to excellent bowling and good conversation there was an opportunity to select some plants, in return for donations with all proceeds going to the gardening group.

The 50 club July draw took place with 30 being the first number drawn - meaning that Brian R receives £50.

Many thanks to Ken and Bill for organising the event. Everyone agreed that it had been good to return to competitive bowling. Singlse competition next? Watch this space.
