I have asked me to investigate ways of increasing opportunities for our Ladies to play competitive bowls. One option worth considering is Bowls England Top Club competition. This is an annual national competition. However, it may involve some travelling were we to enter. Initially, it is based on county fixtures, after which the winner from Somerset plays winners from Devon, Cornwall and Dorset. This year the following clubs entered from Somerset, it would be these clubs we would play in the early rounds.

Somerset clubs entering in 2018

Bath Ladies, Keynsham, Prattens, Alexandra, Purnell, Weston Bath, Congresbury, Portishead RBL, Clevedon, Victoria (W-S-Mare), Ilminster, Watchet, Castle Carey, Yeovil.

This is a knockout tournament. Each match contains 10 players on each side, playing Four‐Wood Singles (21 shots), Four‐Wood Pairs (21 ends), Three‐Wood Triples (18 ends) and Two‐Wood Fours (21 ends). 1pt is awarded for every discipline won, a total of four points available. In the event of a drawn discipline, the point will be shared, i.e. ½ point each. After completion of the four disciplines, the winning side will be decided by the highest number of points. In the case of a tie, the winner will be decided from the total number of shots scored from the four disciplines. Should these be equal as well as the match score, extra ends in the pairs, triples and fours, will be played to determine the result. A further toss of the coin will take place, the winner having the choice of keeping or giving the jack away on the extra ends.
If you would be interested in playing in this tournament in 2019 please write your name on the list in the Ladies dressing room. Obviously, this is an expression of interest with no obligation.
