Long Distance Walks:

The Macmillan Way,

Macmillan Way: A 290 Mile Coast To Coast Footpath Across Fenland And Limestone England.

This is a 290 mile coast to coast path from Boston to Abbotsbury which was developed to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support. The Macmillan Way passes through Castleton and Sherborne on the route from North Cadbury to Yetminster.

The walk has its own waymarks and is shown on the latest editions of the Ordnance Survey maps. The route is described in detail in the Macmillan Way Guidebook. For further details see http://www.macmillanway.org/

This is a 615 mile walk which closely follows the route taken by Charles II in his escape after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Charles II found refuge in the Manor House at Trent. The Monarch's Way crosses the northern edge of Castleton on the route from Trent to Sandford Orcas.

The walk has its own waymarks and is shown on the latest editions of the Ordnance Survey maps. The route is described in detail in three books by Trevor Antill. The two books describing the Monarch’s Way in this area are shown above. Further details can be seen on various websites.

The Orange Way: Les Ham

This 350 mile long distance walk follows the march in 1688 of Prince William of Orange and his army from Brixham in Devon across the countryside to London. The walk passes through Bradford Abbas to Sherborne and on through Goathill on the way to Wincanton.

The walk does not have special waymarks and is not shown as a long distance route on the Ordnance Survey Map.

The walk follows a triangular route from Blandford Forum to Dorchester, from Dorchester to Yeovil and from Yeovil back to Blandford Forum. The walk does not have special waymarks and is not shown as a long distance route on the Ordnance Survey Map

Oborne to Sandford Orcas Walk

This is a 7.4 mile walk on minor roads starting at Oborne Parish Church past Sherborne Golf Course to Sandford Orcas, returning past Holway and Poyntington.  This leaflet is the first in a series of four published by Sherborne Town Council and West Dorset District Council.

Sherborne to Longburton & Lillington Walk

This is a 6.4 mile walk starting at either the Terrace Playing Fields or Culverhayes car park. The path goes up Gainsborough Hill to Longburton, to Lillington, and along Lillington Road past Honeycombe Road before returning along a stretch of the Macmillan Way to the Terraces.  This leaflet is the second in a series of four published by Sherborne Town Council and West Dorset District Council.

Sherborne to North Wootten & Sherborne Park

This is a 6.3 mile walk starting at Culverhays car park. The path goes through the Deer Park to Haydon, to North Wootton before going south to near Folke before returning north down Gainsborough Hill. (Note this route is similar to that described in Walks in History.).  This leaflet is the third in a series of four published by Sherborne Town Council and West Dorset District Council.

Sherborne to Quarr & Coombe Walk.

This is a series of three alternative routes of either 2.4, 3.9 or 4.8 miles starting at the junction of Coombe Road and Blackberry Lane in Sherborne. The route includes Sheeplands Lane, Trent Path Lane, Charlock Hill, Coombe Lane, Redhole Lane and Sandford Orcas Road.  This leaflet is the fourth in a series of four published by Sherborne Town Council and West Dorset District Council.

Milborne Port Parish Walks: The Ridges Walk.

This is a series of three walks from 6 to 8.5 miles starting from East Street Car Park in Milborne Port and going to Seven Wells Down and the source of the River Yeo and along Donkey Lane and the Poyntington Ridge.
