2014 Centenary Season

Our Centenary Season opened on Sunday 13 April.  The Mayor of Wells, Theo Butt-Philip bowled the first wood.  Chair Olive Harrington presented a bouquet of flowers to our guest of honour Amy Tate, a Life Member who will celebrate her 100th birthday in November this year.  The opening was attended by several current and past members of the club.

A game of 10 ends, Ladies v Gentlemen, was played in warm sunshine with the win this year going to the Gentlemen.  The players joined their guests in the clubhouse afterwards for tea and cakes.

  • 13 April 2014 - Open Day - Management Committee.
  • Amy Tate (Life Member) - Amy will be celebrating her 100th Birthday in November 2014. Amy was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Club Chair Olive Harrington & President David Bishop.
  • Mayor bowling 1st Wood - Mayor of Wells, Theo Butt-Philip, bowling the first wood to open our Centenary Season.
  • City of Wells & Somerset Patrons - 19 May - City of Wells & Somerset Patrons before the start of our first Centenary Game. The game resulted in a win for the Patrons by 134 shots to 78.
  • City of Wells & Somerset Executive - 28 May - City of Wells & Somerset Executive before the start of our 2nd Centenary Game. It is also The Centenary Season for Somerset County Bowls. The game resulted in a win for Somerset by 133 shots to 101.
  • City of Wells & Burnham-on-Sea - 1 June - City of Wells & Burnham-on-Sea before their 100th Anniversary match played on 1st June. The original match was played on 3rd June 1914. The result was a tie - 109 shots each - a perfect result!
  • Amy Tate cutting our 100th Anniversary cake together with Don Bridges - Burnham-on-Sea Chairman and David Bishop - City of Wells President. The cake was made by our ladies captain Heather Willerton and decorated by former ladies captain Rose Holley.
  • Our 6 Rink centenary game played against, 1 rink from each of the following clubs, Bridgwater, Clarence, Clevedon, Frome Selwood, Sydney Gardens and Trowbridge Westbourne. The rink wins were shared but Wells won by 118 Shots to 111.
  • Team photo before our game in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. The match resulted in a win for the Royal Household by 119 shots to 94.
  • The 12 teams of Non-Bowlers taken before play on finals night after 5 weeks of competition.
  • The final was played out between the 2 unbeaten teams in each division. Rivalry was high as both teams represent the same skittles team "Clubmen". Mens Club (Mike, Des, Mark & Dave) were victorious over Boys Club (Pete, Matt, Graham & Joe).
  • Tournament Organiser Trudy, alongside Club President David, presents the winning cash prize of £100 to Mark of Mens Club and runners-up prize of £25 to Graham of Boys Club.
  • City of Wells Bowls Club 2014 Centenary Season
  • City of Wells and Mid Somerset League players before their Centenary match. The Bowls Club were pleased to welcome MSL President Barrie Dando and representatives from 7 local clubs for our latest Centenary match. The MSL won by 10 shots 102 - 92.
  • City of Wells played 6 local rinks - from Castle Cary, Prattens, Somerton, Street, Victoria WsM & Wyrall Park. The game resulted in a win for Wells by 117 shots to 85.
  • Players in Club colours on Presidents Day taken after lunch before taking part in 4 games of 5 ends each.
  • President David Bishop presenting the President's Cup to the Winners, Tony Denning, Carol Hamblin & Monty Thomas. They were the only team to win all four of their games.

  • County Finals Day at Fosseway Bowls Club. Heather receiving her County Ladies Singles trophy from Somerset Ladies President Dawn Barnaby.
  • Outgoing President David concludes his Presidential Centenary Year by passing on the President's Chain of Office to incoming President for 2015/16 - Mrs Marlene Rodgers at the Club AGM.
  • The 2014 Presentation Evening Dinner Dance was held at Wells Golf Club. Competition winners with their trophies.
  • At the Somerset County Centenary Presentation Lunch, City of Wells Life Member Amy Tate receives a bouquet of flowers from Ladies County President Dawn Barnaby.
  • As Heather was unable to attend the County Dinner on 2 November, she was presented with her trophy by Club President Marlene at the November coffee morning.
