Match report w/e Sun 30th August
On Tuesday 25th August the men’s Gold Team had a great game against the Three Horseshoes in the EHBL winning on both rinks. Overall score 47 shots to 28. Teams playing were Terry Metcalf, Julian Hales and skip Richard Harper (Top rink) and Phil Holzbauer, Alan Curtis and skip Ian Green.
On Wednesday Datchworth entered three teams in the Triples Gala at Baldock. Here’s Jim Smiths report: Three Datchworth Triples Teams entered Baldock's Gala Day with 24 Triples taking part. Jan Smith, Keith Smith & Les Parsley, Steve Arnold, Richard Harper & Graham Akers and Dickie Jackson, Derek Henley & Jim Smith flying the flag for Datchworth Bowls Club. Les & Graham's Triples had mixed fortunes during the day but Dickie, Derek & Jim won all 4 of their games. We finished as Runners Up with a £90 prize, to a Stevenage Town Triple who were the only other team to win all 4 of their games, but they finished with a better shot difference than us. A very well run and organised day by Baldock and the weather was kind and the green bowled well.
Great result and well done to all who entered.👏
Considering all the top players were at Baldock perhaps it wasn’t so surprising that our away match against Welwyn Garden City resulted in a right royal stuffing😲 All the more frustrating was that we similarly lost to them at home on the 17th August. The only redeeming factor was that Alan Curtis won on his rink by one shot having lost to them on the 17th. Well done Alan, Maureen Blunt and yes, that man again who keeps photobombing this match report, David Stock.😬
I should also mention David Castle and his team of Howard Carrick and Jan Akers who were having a very good game being drawn 15 all on the 16th end but dropping 5 on the 17th end. As for the other teams the less said the better.☹️
Thursday 27th home to Hertford. A great match played in a very good spirit and and a very close result, we won by one shot, 74 to 73. Top rink was Sue Ellis, George Campbell and skip Derek Henley (again). Steve Arnold had a very close game and suggested a tactic I hadn’t heard before “I think I’ll drag my feet for the rest of the game”. Didn’t do him any good, losing by two shots.
In the latter half of the game we had a close call with a thunderstorm which reminded me of Judgement Day, “And behold, the voice of The Supreme Being called out from the heavens and said to Phil “See if you can touch Bernadette up” and that was before a single bowl had been played.
