Plaque 16: Walnut Tree Beer House
Whitings Walnut Tree Beer House: Now the site of flats as 185-195 High Steet, the Walnut Tree was a thatched building of timber-framed construction, possibly dating back to the mid-15th century. It served as an off-licence throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, run by Whitings brewery. Little is otherwise known about this cottage, which was demolished in the mid-1950s.
