From 4 May 2023, voters in England will need to show photo ID to vote at polling stations in some elections.

This will apply to:

  • Local elections
  • Police and Crime Commissioner elections
  • UK parliamentary by-elections;

and, with effect from October 2023, to UK General elections.

Visit the Electoral Commission website to check if you have an accepted form of photo ID.

  • You can still use your ID even if it has expired.
  • If your name is not the same on your photo ID as it appears on the electoral register you either need to re-register or take along documentary proof of your change of name.
  • If you are voting as someone’s proxy you will need to take your photo ID.

If you do not have photo ID

Anyone without suitable photo identification can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) via the link below:

If you are not able to apply online you can download a paper application form. The VAC will be posted directly to the voter. More information on the application process is available on the Electoral Commission's website via this link:

Key dates for Voters:

Deadline to register to vote - Midnight, 17th April
Postal vote deadline - 5pm 18th April
Proxy vote deadline - 5pm 25th April
Deadline to apply for VAC - 5pm 25th April
Deadline to return completed postal vote packs - 10pm 4th May
