St Mary Magdalene Church

St Mary Magdalene Church is one of Stockbury's most historic and distinctive landmarks. The beautiful ancient church stands in an elevated position overlooking the A249, approximately half a mile from the main village of Stockbury. The parish itself extends across both sides of the A249 and includes the small hamlet of South Green.

The history of Christian worship in Stockbury stretches back for many centuries. A church at Stockbury was recorded in the Domesday Book, and it is believed that the church would originally have been associated with the historic settlement situated below the site of the present building.

The church and its surroundings contain many reminders of this long history. The ancient yew tree standing beside the church is thought to be more than 1,000 years old, while some of the carvings within the Chancel are believed to have been designed and created by masons who also worked on Canterbury Cathedral.

Set within the Kent countryside, St Mary Magdalene has remained an important part of Stockbury's heritage and community for generations. Its location, historic architecture and peaceful churchyard make it well worth a visit for those interested in the history of the village.

Visiting the Church

During the summer months, the church is open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays. At other times, access may be available by arrangement.
