Rural Green Initiatives launched

Sutton upon Tern Parish Council have been beavering away over the last six months looking with partners for funding and recruiting local people to help with several environmental projects across its very rural area. Situated between the Shropshire Union Canal, the A529 and A41 on the approach into Market Drayton the Parish Council has secured £500 from the carrier bag fund at Tesco's for tools and materials and £1,500 from Shropshire Councils Environmental Maintenance Grant for verges and ditches on rural road providing half the funding for local highway projects.

The Parish Council has also recently started to partner with the Shropshire Verge Project to develop pilot demonstration verge sites to help restore and create linear wild meadow planting. A working group has been established looking at the co-ordination of all this activity and the latest work of rights of ways across the parish.

Parish Councillor Catherine Morgan who chairs the working group and lives in Pell Wall said

“We are working with North Staffordshire Bridleway Association, Market Drayton Ramblers and local volunteers to survey rights of way routes in the parish. The survey work has more or less been completed and we are moving into our practical stage. This will see our first on site clearance of a footpath in Sutton on Wednesday 10th August 2022 starting at the Four Alls car park on the A529 at 9.15am with our partners from Market Drayton Ramblers. If anyone is interested in getting involved please turn up on the day in your 'old clothes' and sturdy footwear.”

Vice Chairman of the Parish Council Councillor Michael Dams who lives in Woodseaves said

“The Parish Council has been responding to what Parishioners have been talking to us about over this last six months after a targeted leaflet drop amongst the very rural parts of the parish. The focus has clearly been the environment and the many rights of way across the area. We are therefore very pleased to report progress and a number of practical projects to respond to what has been raised. We will be undertaking organised litter picks, bulb planting, and pilot demonstration sites of linear wild meadow flower verge creations. The Parish Council is also working with a number of partners including the Four Alls at Woodseaves and the Shropshire Verge Project.”
