Fly Tipping

What is Fly-Tipping?

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste and is a crime.

So what?

Fly-tipping:

• is a criminal activity that can cause serious pollution of the environment, can be a risk to human health and can harm wildlife and farm animals;

• spoils our local neighbourhoods and quality of life;

• costs an estimated £100m in total to clean up;

• costs local authorities alone £44m each year to clear up;

• is seen as a major problem by over three-quarters of landowners; and affects 67% of farmers;

• undermines legitimate waste management companies who are undercut by illegal operators

What is Sutton Upon Tern Parish Council doing about it?

Our Parish is a beautiful place to live and we are fed up with the problems fly-tipping is causing (see photos).  We are creating 10 fly-tipping observance zones across our parish.  We ask for anyone who spots fly-tipping to report it to the Local Authority and post it on our Facebook site.  The more awareness we can create, the more chance we have to stop this causing a blight on our environment.  The local community network is essential in stopping this illegal activity by communicating anything suspicious witnessed and sharing it on our website.

How can you help?

1. Record details:

Record as many details about the incident and the waste as you can e.g. dates, times and locations, a description of the person dumping waste, their vehicle (registration number, colour, make, model), and whether the person was approached.

Take photos if possible.

2. Report it:

  • Local Authority

Shropshire Council: Click on the “Report fly-tipping” button on the page/link below, or phone 0345 678 9006, with a description of the waste, and a good description of the location
