Playing short mat indoors

Playing Short Mat Indoors

Roll up sessions

Tuesday until Sunday, 2pm until 4pm.

Sunday 10.30 until 1pm

For these sessions, members just turn up at least ten minutes before the session starts and no more than half an hour early. When numbers are known, a draw takes place to establish teams to play. This may involve triples, pairs, singles or a combination of all of these. Beginners usually take the lead position and play first. The most experienced players would either play skip or second, but teams would sort this out. New players who show talent after a few rollups may be invited to join a team by an eagle-eyed team captain. These teams have a practice evening session available to them.

Team nights 6.30 until 9pm

Tuesday          Challengers

Wednesday    Acorns

Friday               Hops

Thursday morning 10am until 12.30 Courtenays

Matches

These are usually played by established teams who’s members know which position they will be playing. The rules of etiquette will apply here as they do outdoors, but some of the basics sometimes forgotten are:

Stand well behind the bowler.

Leads keep out of the way except to clear the bowls which should be passed to them by the seconds

Seconds only get on the mat when their skip is on the mat at the delivery end to explain the situation with the head.

The score must be agreed before any bowls are touched. (Unless measuring necessitates otherwise).
